Normalia – featuring Jacques Butler
2009. Artist book with audio CD, 64 pages, 13 x 14 cm. Edition: 300 ex.
Trough images, text and sound, the work revolves around Normalia – Lange's symbolic union between Norway and Somalia. In this mounting of different historical and contemporary objects, time and space collides and coincides. Questions raises about Norway's national identity, a hundred years after the termination of it's political union with Sweden. Here we find stories about crossing borders of necessity, focused by the artist's investigations in the biography of Afro-American jazz soloist Jacques Butler (1909-2003) – the first black artist to make a recording with Norwegian musicians in Norway, shortly before the German occupation in 1940.
